Kindred Spirit Richness: Real Wealth Includes Sharing Our Lives with all Beings

Veterinarians Beyond Borders

Veterinarians Beyond Borders

A number of synchronistic musings about wealth and happiness came across my path these past two weeks. These days there has been so much talk about the economy and the challenges of 2012 and onward. It seems somewhat ironic that the financially wealthiest individuals in the world have gathered together at the World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland to discuss austerity measures for the rest of the world. It has been acknowledged that much of the global financial corruption is by in large the cause of the economic collapse resulting in prescribed austerity measures for the middle class. It stirs up questions about what all these world leaders and financial leaders must think as they watch others hard earned life savings vaporize due to the global financial corruption.

I then came across a blog post written by David Wolfe, a leader in the raw food movement, pondering what “rich” really means. His post is titled “Why I am not a millionaire”. It seems that all his savvy internet marketing has stirred up his followers assuming he is making a fortune on all his promotions of healthy foods and super foods. He took the time to explain that he considers himself a “wandering Daoist”, never accumulating many funds, teaching from passion about helping others and that is what makes his life rich.

It stimulated me to reflect on what brings me joy and makes me feel “rich” at this moment in time. Through these reflections, I realized that sharing time with family, friends, nature, in quiet reflection and living in a conscious, compassionate community brings me my true joy.  I also cherish being of benefit  to animals and their humans worldwide. When asking friends, they shared similar thoughts. Time shared with our animal companions, whether domestic such as with our dogs, cats, horses etc. as well as wild animals that may surround our home brings a deep seated joy, independent of finances.

One couple shared that in the Jewish tradition the word for “rich” is the same for inner happiness. I feel that that is really the key. I have watched hard earned savings diminish for various reasons and have experienced the impermanence of all. I realize that richness is truly in each and every moment. I reflected on the times I would lie down on my couch in front of the wood fire after a long day in freezing cold horse barns treating the horses, dogs and cats at the barn, appreciating all the animals I was able to help that day. My rescued golden retriever, shanti, would lay by my side and somehow gently figure out how to get my hand petting his head as my black and white rough and tumbled, stocky rescued stray cat , Chi, would jump onto my chest, lay down and have his diesel powered purr warm and vibrate my body back to life. I would take a deep, relaxed sigh and slowly dissolve into a gentle, warm fuzzy, blissful feeling. They would help me heal from long hours, day after day in the cold barns. To me, this is true wealth, a truly rich life. When friends visit with their dogs or cats and we all cuddle together in front of the wood fire, these are priceless moments. Sharing time with our loved ones, two-legged, four-legged and winged is a kindred spirit richness that is so luscious, beyond words.  To me, real wealth includes sharing our lives with all beings.  How do the times spent with loved ones make you feel in your heart? Feel that right now and appreciate this rich moment. For really that is all there is, one rich moment followed by another.
It also provoked me to ponder about the way we use language. For instance, how we “spend” time, rather than experience or share time with others. It seems like the global mind training is that everything has a “price” and things must be done for profit. But what is profit? Is it only financial?
I invite my readers to ponder what makes them feel “rich” during these more challenging economic times. What really brings one deep, deep, inner peace, calm and joy? Perhaps write or chat about this and show gratitude and appreciation to all those beings that bring you true inner joy and peace.

When we transition from this physical form, our human bodies, what memories will bring you joy? I love the saying I once heard, “I never saw a hearse with a luggage rack”. What can we take with us as we transition into the formless? What truly makes you feel rich?
For animal lovers, I continuously hear that time shared with their animal companions are some of their most joyous, rich moments. What I now call kindred spirit richness! A richness beyond words!  Take a moment and express gratitude and appreciation for the kindred spirits in your lives and let them know in some special way how they make your life richer, moment by moment.  Now that is real wealth!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts regarding this question.

Science of Interconnectedness

Creation of a Trans-species Field

Another essential foundation of The Kindred Spirits Project focuses on  how the awareness and personal experience of the interconnectedness of all beings can bring about a further evolution in the development of a more compassionate society.  I have been proposing that a “trans-species field (TM) exists when different beings interact with each other.  I call this the Trans-species Field Theory (TM).  I personally believe this is part of the feeling of unconditional love (or not) between us and our animal companions.  There are different variations on the theme of these concepts from scientist Lynn McTaggert’s book “The Field”, to Rupert Sheldrakes theory of “Morphic Fields” and Morphic Resonance.  They seem to have as a commonality of resonant frequencies.  It seems that everything that exists in matter has both a physical appearance as well as a vibrational frequency, a field that it emanates.  When two fields interact, it like two tuning forks interacting with each other.  We tend to feel more comfortable in fields that resonate with us and not so comfortable in fields that are dissonant to our resonant frequency.  In previous posts, I actually posit that humans may actually be subdividing into different “sub-species” based on whether we resonate with the quieter frequencies of nature and animals or if more and more of us are resonating with the vibrational frequencies of motors and electronics.

I was pleased to see this interview titled “The Science of Interconnectedness” in  Superconsciousness Magazine with pioneering biologist Rupert Sheldrake.   Years ago we briefly connected while facilitating different workshops at the same retreat center.   Sheldrake states that “Morphic resonance is the way that things tune into each other. It works on the basis of similarity, the same principle as ordinary resonance”.  He offers the analogies that “Many modern technologies work on resonance; radio and television are both resonant technologies. For instance, radio works because we tune into the specific frequency of a particular radio station, say 99.8 on your FM receiver. However, the room that you are currently standing in is filled with countless frequencies, including radio, television, and mobile phone transmissions. The reason we do not become overwhelmed is because we are not specifically tuned into their specific frequencies.”

This is the basis for cliche’s like “I do or do not resonate with you”, “good vibrations”, “that person gives off good or bad vibes”, etc.  These vibrational frequencies may be why some people are so agitated in cities and feel so comfortable in nature.  There are an infinite number of vibrational frequencies in cities from the vibration of all the living beings, the vibrations of all the radio, tv, internet, wireless, phone, smart meters etc. bombarding our own personal field continuously.  Some posit that being bombarded by all these vibrational frequencies may be one cause of “dis-ease”, the lack of ease that we feel when we are in dissonant fields.  Interestingly though, there are some people that seem to have adapted to living in the midst of all these fields and feel uncomfortable when just being in nature.  They seem to be actually more comfortable in the midst of all the hustle and bustle and all the fields.  Other people do not seem to recognize that they are vibrating differently when in a city, they simple feel more irritable, impatient, angry, frustrated or other emotions that can manifest when we are not in a place of inner peace.

There may also be larger fields that encompass not only all beings, but our entire planet and even perhaps the universe.  Some have called these larger fields the information field, the Akashic Record, the collective consciousness which we also discussed in previous posts.  Sheldrake proposes that the Morphic resonant field is ” a kind of collective memory. Every member of a species draws upon the collective memory of that species, and in turn contributes to it. You could say it’s like a collective consciousness, but actually it’s more like the collective unconscious. We’re always tuning into it and contributing to it, so it’s a bit like the idea of the collective unconscious put forward by the psychologist C.G. Jung.”

There are smaller and larger resonant fields.  Different species are a manifestation of their species resonant field.  I feel that there are new continuously evolving fields when different beings get together.  I find that each place where humans and animals interact creates their own “trans-species field (TM) whether it be a horse barn, animal shelter, animal hospital, zoo etc.  That may be why one feels quite different in different  places of human animal interactions.  Do you notice that in different places where you share time with animals?  How would you describe that?

Sheldrake further “suggests that the form the energy takes is determined, bound with, and organized by the fields. For instance, we know in modern physics that quantum fields organize quantum particles. We also know there are gravitational fields, electromagnetic fields, and in addition to those fields, there are also morphic fields — fields that organize the form and the behavior of animals and plants.”

Sheldrake is ” pushing forward a view that the mind is a system of fields. The fields are in the brain but they extend beyond the brain, just like the field of a magnet is inside the magnet and extends around it. And the field of your cell phone is inside your cell phone, but it extends far beyond its circuits, invisibly. I suggest that the mind is totally detached from matter and time and space.”

This is the basis of my trans-species field theory.  My theory is that the fields emanating from each living being interact when they are in more intimate contact and that each field influences the other and creates this new “trans-species field”.  For example the more you around your kindred spirit, the more the two of you resonate together.  Many people observe that they and their dogs, cats, horses or other animals begin to mimic them, act like them and be like them in general.  Now, some of that may be simply due to our animals being excellent observers of human behavior and mimic us in their own way, or it may be based on mirror neurons in our brain or may be due to resonating energetic fields.  I feel it may actually be a combination of all these possibilities.

The exciting implications of these theories is that the more we become aware of the science of interconnectedness and experience how deeply we are all interconnected, we can become more sensitive and aware of how our thoughts, emotions and choices can positively impact on all other beings.  When we are not aware of all the amazing connections continuously unfolding between all of us and mother earth, we just go about life doing our own thing and not feeling we can have any positive impact on what is happening in this wild and wondrous world.  On the other hand, once we are aware of all these awesome connections, we can rejoice and appreciate how our choice of emanating loving kindness and compassion to all beings can actually create a happier, healthier world!  May we all emanate Happy, healthy, loving fields to all beings!

Kindred Spirits Helping Each Other

A friend sent me this photo essay going around the internet.  I found it incredibly touching.  Personally, it felt like it was a demonstration of intelligence, trust, and nonverbal communication between species that was perhaps the way it used to be, prior to so much division and fear having developed between  humans and other animals. It was heartening to see how the fisherman and his family assisted them.  It is a promising illustration of how perhaps we can all help each other in the midst of the global environmental challenges we are confronting in 2012.

Perhaps we can all use this as a healthy, joyous reminder of how we can help all beings in need beyond all labels of species, predator, prey, us vs. them, self vs. other.  We can all support each other in creating a more peaceful world in 2012!

A DEER STORY FROM ALASKA
A Heart Warming  and Amazing Rescue , in Sitka  Alaska
Amazing story…a  miracle of sorts, really!
The Best Day Of Fishing Ever!

I’ve heard of salmon jumping into boats, but never anything quite like this…
Tom Satre told the Sitka Gazette that he was out with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat.

Deer Swimming for Help

“Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at us.  We could tell right away that the young bucks were distressed.

I opened up my back gate and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals onto the boat.  In all my years fishing, I’ve never seen anything quite like it!

Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.”

Deer Resting on Board

Deer Resting On Board

“This is a picture I took of the rescued bucks on the back of
my boat, the Alaska Quest.  We headed for Taku Harbour.

Once we reached the dock, the first buck that we had pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back as if to say ‘thank you’ and disappeared into the forest.

After a bit of prodding and assistance, two more followed, but the smallest deer needed a little more help.

Deer Rescued

This is me carrying the little guy.

Deer Rescued

My daughter, Anna, and son, Tim, helped the last buck to its feet.
We didn’t know how long they had been in the icy waters or
if there had been others who did not survive.  My daughter later told me that the experience was something that she would never forget,

and I suspect the deer felt the same way as well!”

Thank you for sharing these photographs and story with all of us!

Walking In Sync with Your Kindred Spirit: A Breakthrough In Humane Dog Training

Walk In Sync Humane Dog Training

In addition to exploring the foundations of our universal interconnectedness, from inner and outer silence to consciousness, I also feel it is important to share very practical day to day foundations for your animals health including nutrition, exercise, humane training and preventive health care.  Appropriate humane, behavioral training is essential for a happy, healthy kindred spirit relationship.  Sharing your walks together is great exercise, but if your dog pulls, yanks or tries to chase other animals, it can make part of the walk a bit more challenging.  Alecia Evans, the brilliant developer of this harness and humane technique states that if  you “can’t take your dog all the places you want to due to: pulling, jumping, lunging, shyness, over-enthusiasm when greeting other dogs or people or if your dog leads you”, this approach may indeed solve all these issues. Watch this video: Dog Walk In Sync Technology Dog Walk In Sync Technology

I  am very excited and honored to share with you something I was just recently introduced to that I feel is the most revolutionary approach to humane, healthy behavioral training of dogs that I have ever come across.   Though I resist buy levaquin 750 endorsing certain technologies and products, this is so evolutionary that I feel obliged to share this with all of you.  It is a new design of a humane harness for dogs that does not appear to cause any musculoskeletal alignment challenges to the dog and allows for a more dynamic, sensitive connection between you and your dog when walking with them.  It is called “Walk-In-Sync”. I have discussed this and other approaches with Alecia Evans, the dynamic, brilliant dog trainer, animal communicator, Chi-gong and breathwork instructor who  has developed this technology for the benefit of all dogs and their caretakers.  Check out Alecia Evans website and blog.  She has some extremely educational and insightful video’s on her breakthrough dog training approach.  I am recommending it to all my clients and followers.  I cannot put it any better than she has already, so check out her video’s and I suggest trying one for your dog, whether you have behavioral issues of pulling, yanking, resisting or just to have a much deeper connection with your dog when walking.

Let me know what you think and what your experiences are with “Walk-In-Sync”.

Blessings for a more enjoyable Kindred Spirit Walk!

Kindred Spirits: The Lighter Side

Periodically someone sends one of these internet photo collections that stimulate our hearts with joy.  I always enjoy sharing these with others.  It is the lighter side of the Kindred Spirits Project, yet an essential part as just seeing them brings a smile to our face, stimulates constructive neurotransmitters and  makes us and everyone we interact with a bit happier.  That is one great thing about the internet is how simple it is to share joy through photo’s so quickly with so many.

As sweet as this post is, I would add an important caveat.  Sharing these photographs here is not in anyway meant to support or endorse  inappropriate interactions between dogs and babies.  One has to have a  respectable trust level between individual dogs and babies.  We have all heard of destructive interactions that did not end well and one needs to use appropriate precautions and  awareness when considering having babies and dogs interact.  It is certainly a joy in appropriate, trustworthy  interactions.

With that caveat in mind, Enjoy watching the love between two beings!

P.S.  If any of these  photo’s require acknowledgement or credit to a particular person, company or whomever, please let me know and I will be glad to credit you or remove this beautiful sharing if desired.  Much gratitude to you, whomever,  for creating such  heartfelt photographs that brings joy to so many!

From Dinosaur to Chic: The Quiet of Nature

Serenity

A client and dear friend forwarded me this wonderful  New York Times opinion article written by a favorite author of mine, Pico Iyer, from December 29, 2011 titled “The Joy of Quiet”.  My clients comment to me after reading the article, was:   “As I sit quietly at night, with the only sound in my home being the breathing of my asthmatic cat, who knew that I had gone from dinosaur to cutting edge chic?” I feel like this amusing, but truthful article is an appropriate beginning blog post for the New Year as silence and quiet time in nature are a key part of the foundation of the kindred spirits project.  My friend also commented  “I thought this would resonate with you”.  It did indeed.  I felt like Pico personally endorsed and reaffirmed my own decisions and that perhaps, I no longer needed to consider myself a dinosaur for choosing to live on a quieter, more remote island, living a more peaceful life with less nonstop connection to the outer world. I chuckled as I read it and thought, oh, I am not the only one who has made a conscious choice like that.   Cool beans, my choices are now becoming chic for a new generation!

After living around the greater New York area most of my life, and heading off  to quiet retreats around the world whenever possible to rebalance my attunement to the calmer vibrational frequencies of nature, and then finally moving to a more tranquil island,  I too feel acknowledged by this article.  It is not easy to make these conscious choices as the majority of the population chooses to stay tuned to the world 24/7 , competing to survive, and thriving on the nonstop busy mind traffic. Like a frog in boiling water society has slowly adapted to the increase in noise, visual, water and air pollution.  All the chronic busyness and stress impacts on our mental, emotional, physical and spiritual states.  After my first ten years of veterinary practice, being on emergency call every other night and inevitably being called out every other night, I was well aware of that stress and the toll it took on me and my soul yearned for disconnection from phones, beepers, etc. (more…)

Kindred Spirits Wishes for a Joyous Completion of 2011

My sister sent me this email that appears to be passing around the internet. It seems quite appropriate for this blog at this time.  Pictures and captions regarding the human animal bond and inter-species connections always stimulate a smile.  The joyous smile then subsequently creates a change in our neurotransmitters and neurohormones and thereby positive shifts in our behaviors and actions that fill us and thereby others with joy.  May these photographs bring joy to your hearts and your families as the dynamic year of 2011 comes to a conclusion.
Blessings for a joyous New Year and may all your positive intentions manifest in ways beyond your wildest imagination and may they all be of benefit to all beings!

Celebrate the Holidays with All Beings: A Special Gorilla Connection

gorilla connectionGorilla Connection

After a few week hiatus from writing about  insights on the kindred spirits project blog due to a “time-challenged”  schedule of seeing my horse, dog and cat patients,  there are so many exciting and interesting perspectives I would like to share with all of you.  I would like to begin this renewed sharing with a video that brought such joy to my heart. It feels especially appropriate for this holiday season, illustrating the connection between all beings that transcends words.

This video of  a  Gorilla Connection, where an ecotourist  visiting them in their endangered sanctuary in Uganda demonstrates to me how if we all can shift our hearts and minds to be in an inner place of love wherever possible, what miracles can occur.  They have chosen to introduce a complete stranger to their intimate family of parents and children.  Wherever I go, I find that if we come from a place of inner peace and quiet, without fear, animals of all species gradually warm up to us and treat us as one with them.  I am blessed to share my small sanctuary with two family of deer who give birth, one to one fawn and one to twins every year underneath my deck.  A pair of Anna’s hummingbirds stay all winter around my cabin sitting in the dead arbutus tree branches or on top of the douglas firs and sip the nectar from the yellow oregon grape flowers.  Eagles, otters, seals, herons, flickers, junko’s, chicadee’s, quail, raccoon, and many other families reside on, above, below or around my sanctuary.  As we all get to know each other throughout the various seasons, we come to accept all living together comfortably without fear.  As I fill the bird feeder, the birds are all inches away on the branches chirping to me as if to say “thank you and hurry up please”.  When I sit in a chair outside, the hummingbirds will come fly right in front of my face and look at me eye to eye.  We can truly live in a garden of eden if we choose to.  It is simply a choice to create a sanctuary around us and within us that nurtures a compassionate life with all beings, beyond all labels and species.

In this time of celebration of the winter solstice,  Christmas, Chanukah, the shifting of seasons, let us celebrate not only with our immediate family, but with the larger family of all beings, two-legged, four-legged and winged.  Let us expand our compassion web to integrate a fun, loving relationship and rejoice in a much more expansive view of family!  Yes, we are all family, in one small neighborhood, mother earth!

Wishing you all a joyous, healthy, peaceful, prosperous, fun, enlightening and awesome holiday season and New Year!

Blessings from your kindred spirit,

Gratitude for All Kindred Spirits!

Thanksgiving Day in the U.S. is always an excellent reminder for all we are blessed with.  I find myself today so grateful for all my kindred spirits that I share this adventurous journey of life with including family, friends and all our animal companions that we share life with.  I find myself grateful to all the wildlife families that we share our lives with as well.  There seems to be this respectful flow of animals that share all the dropped sunflower seeds from my birdfeeder.  They seem to show up at certain times during the day and during the week. Joy fills my heart as I see my chickadee family chirp with glee as I fill the feeder and they huddle inches away on the branches waiting till I complete the task. The nuthatches sing their songs, the junko’s and all the other songbirds patiently await their treats.  Then the quail family shows up to eat whatever has fallen to the ground, the deer that are born underneath my deck then meander through, one generation after the other.  In the evening the raccoons explore to see if there is anything left.  The hummingbirds search the flowers for their delicious nectar.  Yes, I am grateful for all the families that I share my life with, two-legged, four-legged and winged.  In the midst of all the global challenges, I am thankful that I am able to share my life with all these beautiful beings.

I would like to share with you today one of my favorite blogs, tinybuddha.com, .  Lori Deschene, alias, Tiny Buddha has quite the following for a young seeker and has just written a wonderful book based on her blog.  I have been meaning to share her wise blog with my readers as I think many of you will be able to relate to many of the insights she shares.  So, as a gift of gratitude to all my readers, I offer you her Thanksgiving blog on 50 ways to show your gratitude to all beings.  I just simply add showing gratitude to all our animal friends as well.  What ways do you show gratitude to your animal friends?

Wishing you all a Joyous Thanksgiving!

Blessings from a kindred spirit,

Allen Schoen, DVM

Canine Pilgrimage Workshop

Canine Pilgrimage

Dog pilgrimage walk on the beach

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
From Daily Chore to Inspiring Spiritual Practice: Dog-Walking as Pilgrimage
Have you ever whined that once again the dog needs a walk?
Have you ever shivered with the unsavoury thought that you had to take the dog out in the cold and rain?
If you are like me, the answer to those questions is an unbridled “Yes! Arghhh!”
So it got me thinkin’ . . . . what if I started to ‘go on pilgrimage’ with my dear dog Paz? What would happen? How would that change my daily walks with him?
Would I enjoy it more? Would HE enjoy it more?  It has been an interesting experiment for me. So, what has happened for me so far . . . .
Now. I seem to be more in now. I don’t stop to smell all those dog-yummy smells, mind you, but I do notice the roses, the trees, my inner self and enjoy Paz’s whims more.
Perspective. The real trick to life is not avoiding or not having problems – it’s perspective. I find, when I’m out, on pilgrimage, I leave my routine, I leave my stuck places and get some perspective on what is happening back at the ranch. (OK, no horses here, but you know . . . !) Then I relax and can be more creative. I find that this can happen in even just a very few minutes in the most seemingly mundane of circumstances – if I’m wearing my pilgrimage hat.
Connection. As I relax I can connect more. With my dog, my self, and other living beings around me of all types! And that is just helpful all ’round.
That dang dog waiting at the door wagging his tail is really an astonishing opportunity!

I am so excited to announce that my friend and colleague Dr. Allen Schoen is going to be co-facilitating this Dog-Walking as Pilgrimage walkshop with me. For decades he has been pioneering holistic, integrative veterinary medicine and human animal bond, practicing, writing and teaching worldwide. His latest work can be seen herewww.kindredspiritsproject.com where, as he says, his vision is: “to assist animal lovers throughout the world to gather together and unite in order to nurture, transform, concentrate and focus the unconditional love that they share with their animal companions into compassionate action to help improve the quality of life, happiness and health of all beings.” Important work!
Pilgrimage is not something I’ve done, it is something I inhabit. It has taken me to many parts of the world and deeper into myself. I have noticed that when we frame a walk, a trip, a journey of any kind, as a pilgrimage, we shift from being a seer of sites to being a seer from our own hearts and souls. We CAN just walk out our front doors and be on pilgrimage whenever we have that urge to walk! Check it out in more detail atwww.nicolemoen.ca.
