Kindred Neighbors

A friend sent me these photographs that seem to be circulating over the internet.  They remind me of how grateful I am to share my personal neighborhood with so many families of various species including deer, raccoons, hummingbirds, eagles, vultures, otters, seals, seabirds, etc.  I feel like our lives are so much richer when we share our lives not just with our inside animal companions, but also with the vast array of living beings that we used to share lives with when we lived in more rural area’s.  It is nice to see how different species can adapt to our newly recreated landscapes of suburbs and cities. In New York City there are periodic recordings of Peregrine falcons and other birds of prey that make nests on the skyscrapers or the odd coyote that makes its way into Central Park.  When I lived in rural northwestern Connecticut we would see the bobcat, coyotes, foxes, and here reports of the odd moose or mountain lion that would meander into the nearby woods as the greenspaces levaquin back order connected with forests farther north.

Certainly, one needs to be aware and cautious of certain wild predators as well as the potential tick borne diseases from ticks that are carried on certain species. In addition, some can certainly cause damage to landscaping and gardens.  Personally though, I think the benefits of sharing our lives with wildlife far outweigh the disadvantages as long as we take appropriate precautions.

The email going around jokingly calls these elk “street gangs”.  I prefer to call them kindred neighbors.  Enjoy the beauty!

STREET GANGS IN CALGARY , ALBERTA

It’s gangs like these that the people of Calgary have to put up with..

A bit different from the problems in other cities…

It proves that every City has their own “unique” gang problems. They roam the streets and yards night and day.

They hang out in even the best neighborhoods!

..and you CANNOT (legally) stop them.

AREN’T THEY MAGNIFICENT !!!!???

Thank you to whoever put these photographs up on the internet.  Thank you for sharing them. If you request credit for them, please let us know.

Science of Interconnectedness

Creation of a Trans-species Field

Another essential foundation of The Kindred Spirits Project focuses on  how the awareness and personal experience of the interconnectedness of all beings can bring about a further evolution in the development of a more compassionate society.  I have been proposing that a “trans-species field (TM) exists when different beings interact with each other.  I call this the Trans-species Field Theory (TM).  I personally believe this is part of the feeling of unconditional love (or not) between us and our animal companions.  There are different variations on the theme of these concepts from scientist Lynn McTaggert’s book “The Field”, to Rupert Sheldrakes theory of “Morphic Fields” and Morphic Resonance.  They seem to have as a commonality of resonant frequencies.  It seems that everything that exists in matter has both a physical appearance as well as a vibrational frequency, a field that it emanates.  When two fields interact, it like two tuning forks interacting with each other.  We tend to feel more comfortable in fields that resonate with us and not so comfortable in fields that are dissonant to our resonant frequency.  In previous posts, I actually posit that humans may actually be subdividing into different “sub-species” based on whether we resonate with the quieter frequencies of nature and animals or if more and more of us are resonating with the vibrational frequencies of motors and electronics.

I was pleased to see this interview titled “The Science of Interconnectedness” in  Superconsciousness Magazine with pioneering biologist Rupert Sheldrake.   Years ago we briefly connected while facilitating different workshops at the same retreat center.   Sheldrake states that “Morphic resonance is the way that things tune into each other. It works on the basis of similarity, the same principle as ordinary resonance”.  He offers the analogies that “Many modern technologies work on resonance; radio and television are both resonant technologies. For instance, radio works because we tune into the specific frequency of a particular radio station, say 99.8 on your FM receiver. However, the room that you are currently standing in is filled with countless frequencies, including radio, television, and mobile phone transmissions. The reason we do not become overwhelmed is because we are not specifically tuned into their specific frequencies.”

This is the basis for cliche’s like “I do or do not resonate with you”, “good vibrations”, “that person gives off good or bad vibes”, etc.  These vibrational frequencies may be why some people are so agitated in cities and feel so comfortable in nature.  There are an infinite number of vibrational frequencies in cities from the vibration of all the living beings, the vibrations of all the radio, tv, internet, wireless, phone, smart meters etc. bombarding our own personal field continuously.  Some posit that being bombarded by all these vibrational frequencies may be one cause of “dis-ease”, the lack of ease that we feel when we are in dissonant fields.  Interestingly though, there are some people that seem to have adapted to living in the midst of all these fields and feel uncomfortable when just being in nature.  They seem to be actually more comfortable in the midst of all the hustle and bustle and all the fields.  Other people do not seem to recognize that they are vibrating differently when in a city, they simple feel more irritable, impatient, angry, frustrated or other emotions that can manifest when we are not in a place of inner peace.

There may also be larger fields that encompass not only all beings, but our entire planet and even perhaps the universe.  Some have called these larger fields the information field, the Akashic Record, the collective consciousness which we also discussed in previous posts.  Sheldrake proposes that the Morphic resonant field is ” a kind of collective memory. Every member of a species draws upon the collective memory of that species, and in turn contributes to it. You could say it’s like a collective consciousness, but actually it’s more like the collective unconscious. We’re always tuning into it and contributing to it, so it’s a bit like the idea of the collective unconscious put forward by the psychologist C.G. Jung.”

There are smaller and larger resonant fields.  Different species are a manifestation of their species resonant field.  I feel that there are new continuously evolving fields when different beings get together.  I find that each place where humans and animals interact creates their own “trans-species field (TM) whether it be a horse barn, animal shelter, animal hospital, zoo etc.  That may be why one feels quite different in different  places of human animal interactions.  Do you notice that in different places where you share time with animals?  How would you describe that?

Sheldrake further “suggests that the form the energy takes is determined, bound with, and organized by the fields. For instance, we know in modern physics that quantum fields organize quantum particles. We also know there are gravitational fields, electromagnetic fields, and in addition to those fields, there are also morphic fields — fields that organize the form and the behavior of animals and plants.”

Sheldrake is ” pushing forward a view that the mind is a system of fields. The fields are in the brain but they extend beyond the brain, just like the field of a magnet is inside the magnet and extends around it. And the field of your cell phone is inside your cell phone, but it extends far beyond its circuits, invisibly. I suggest that the mind is totally detached from matter and time and space.”

This is the basis of my trans-species field theory.  My theory is that the fields emanating from each living being interact when they are in more intimate contact and that each field influences the other and creates this new “trans-species field”.  For example the more you around your kindred spirit, the more the two of you resonate together.  Many people observe that they and their dogs, cats, horses or other animals begin to mimic them, act like them and be like them in general.  Now, some of that may be simply due to our animals being excellent observers of human behavior and mimic us in their own way, or it may be based on mirror neurons in our brain or may be due to resonating energetic fields.  I feel it may actually be a combination of all these possibilities.

The exciting implications of these theories is that the more we become aware of the science of interconnectedness and experience how deeply we are all interconnected, we can become more sensitive and aware of how our thoughts, emotions and choices can positively impact on all other beings.  When we are not aware of all the amazing connections continuously unfolding between all of us and mother earth, we just go about life doing our own thing and not feeling we can have any positive impact on what is happening in this wild and wondrous world.  On the other hand, once we are aware of all these awesome connections, we can rejoice and appreciate how our choice of emanating loving kindness and compassion to all beings can actually create a happier, healthier world!  May we all emanate Happy, healthy, loving fields to all beings!

Kindred Spirits Helping Each Other

A friend sent me this photo essay going around the internet.  I found it incredibly touching.  Personally, it felt like it was a demonstration of intelligence, trust, and nonverbal communication between species that was perhaps the way it used to be, prior to so much division and fear having developed between  humans and other animals. It was heartening to see how the fisherman and his family assisted them.  It is a promising illustration of how perhaps we can all help each other in the midst of the global environmental challenges we are confronting in 2012.

Perhaps we can all use this as a healthy, joyous reminder of how we can help all beings in need beyond all labels of species, predator, prey, us vs. them, self vs. other.  We can all support each other in creating a more peaceful world in 2012!

A DEER STORY FROM ALASKA
A Heart Warming  and Amazing Rescue , in Sitka  Alaska
Amazing story…a  miracle of sorts, really!
The Best Day Of Fishing Ever!

I’ve heard of salmon jumping into boats, but never anything quite like this…
Tom Satre told the Sitka Gazette that he was out with a charter group on his 62-foot fishing vessel when four juvenile black-tailed deer swam directly toward his boat.

Deer Swimming for Help

“Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking directly at us.  We could tell right away that the young bucks were distressed.

I opened up my back gate and we helped the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals onto the boat.  In all my years fishing, I’ve never seen anything quite like it!

Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.”

Deer Resting on Board

Deer Resting On Board

“This is a picture I took of the rescued bucks on the back of
my boat, the Alaska Quest.  We headed for Taku Harbour.

Once we reached the dock, the first buck that we had pulled from the water hopped onto the dock, looked back as if to say ‘thank you’ and disappeared into the forest.

After a bit of prodding and assistance, two more followed, but the smallest deer needed a little more help.

Deer Rescued

This is me carrying the little guy.

Deer Rescued

My daughter, Anna, and son, Tim, helped the last buck to its feet.
We didn’t know how long they had been in the icy waters or
if there had been others who did not survive.  My daughter later told me that the experience was something that she would never forget,

and I suspect the deer felt the same way as well!”

Thank you for sharing these photographs and story with all of us!

Kindred Spirits: The Lighter Side

Periodically someone sends one of these internet photo collections that stimulate our hearts with joy.  I always enjoy sharing these with others.  It is the lighter side of the Kindred Spirits Project, yet an essential part as just seeing them brings a smile to our face, stimulates constructive neurotransmitters and  makes us and everyone we interact with a bit happier.  That is one great thing about the internet is how simple it is to share joy through photo’s so quickly with so many.

As sweet as this post is, I would add an important caveat.  Sharing these photographs here is not in anyway meant to support or endorse  inappropriate interactions between dogs and babies.  One has to have a  respectable trust level between individual dogs and babies.  We have all heard of destructive interactions that did not end well and one needs to use appropriate precautions and  awareness when considering having babies and dogs interact.  It is certainly a joy in appropriate, trustworthy  interactions.

With that caveat in mind, Enjoy watching the love between two beings!

P.S.  If any of these  photo’s require acknowledgement or credit to a particular person, company or whomever, please let me know and I will be glad to credit you or remove this beautiful sharing if desired.  Much gratitude to you, whomever,  for creating such  heartfelt photographs that brings joy to so many!

Foundation for Kindred Spirits Project: Consciousness

Conscious Connections

Conscious Connections

One key foundation for the kindred spirits project is consciousness. As the new year begins, I will be sharing different concepts on the foundations of the kindred spirits project.  We begin the New Year with our last post on silence and nature.  This new post explores what it seems like is one real key to the foundation for all life, consciousness. It seems like one of the  foundations for the interconnectedness of all beings is consciousness.  I just came across this website and dvd’s called “The Consciousness Chronicles”.  The Consciousness Chronicles Video offers an introduction to great thinkers who are exploring consciousness based on the latest science.I have seen some of these scientists interviewed on other documentaries and they offer a great scientific basis for uncovering the basis of consciousness based on the latest discoveries in neuroscience, quantum physics, consciousness studies and the new biology.

Wikipedia defines consciousness as “a term that refers to the relationship between the mind and the world with which it interacts.[1] It has been defined as: subjectivityawareness, the ability to experience or to feel, wakefulness, having a sense of selfhood, and the executive control system of the mind.[2] Despite the difficulty in definition, many philosophers believe that there is a broadly shared underlying intuition about what consciousness is.[3] As Max Velmans and Susan Schneider wrote in The Blackwell Companion to Consciousness: “Anything that we are aware of at a given moment forms part of our consciousness, making conscious experience at once the most familiar and most mysterious aspect of our lives.”[4]Wikipedia provides an excellent discussion of consciousness.

I feel that consciousness is an integral part of the deepest connections between us and all other beings. I feel that consciousness is a key component of what I call  my “The Trans-species Field Theory” Some “free range” thinkers, scientists and philosophers feel that there exists a field of greater consciousness that connects us all, a collective consciousness.  It has also been called a “conscious commons”.  Some cutting edge thinkers believe that a field exists that some call “the information field”.  Scientist and inventor, Marc Newkirk has developed some cutting edge technology that he claims can assist us in connecting to this information field, what he calls “the lightfield”.   His video discussion of this and his website provide some fascinating food for thought on this subject.   Some spiritual traditions have called this field “the akashic record”.

Ervin Laszlo, a leading systems theorist who was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize is the author of “The buy levofloxacin 750 mg Akashic Experience, Science and the Cosmic Memory Field” as he calls it.  In this book, they state “20 leading authorities in fields such as psychiatry, physics, philosophy, anthropology, natural healing,  etc. offer first hand accounts of interactions with a cosmic memory field that can transmit information to people without having to go through the senses”. There are numerous other references and thoughts on this field from all spiritual traditions.  A fascinating discussion of consciousness and other deeper connections from the Tibetan Buddhist perspective is offered in a well written book titled “Mind Beyond Death” by Dzogchen Ponlop. What I find fascinating is that even though we cannot see, smell, touch, or have any physical evidence of this field, nowadays forward thinking, open minded scientists, physicists, physicians, biologists, etc. are all studying and documenting a field that our ancient traditions have taught about for centuries. It is indeed time to integrate the latest in science with the truths of ancient traditions.

How does this relate to our dear dogs, cats, horses and other animal companions?  There are many people who call themselves “animal communicators”.  We will discuss these labels in a future post.  I actually feel we are all animal communicators. We all communicate with animals, especially ones that we are closer to and that we have an emotional, loving bond with.  Some of these levels of communication are through our fives senses, observing one another, touching one another, smelling each other, hearing each others voices etc.  Much of this is nonverbal communication. There seem to be even deeper levels of nonverbal communication between us and animals. Some individuals have certainly developed their personal skills to a higher level that allows them to connect with animals in ways that others are not normally aware of.  I personally have experienced, seen and known of different levels of communication that defy our commonly understood scientific basis of communication.  Experience turns knowledge into wisdom.  Once one experiences these other levels of connection, then the next step if one wants to go there, is to try to understand them.  Extremist skeptics tend to just say brush them off as “voodoo” or pseudo-science”.  How often in history has something been labeled magic, voodoo, pseudoscience, garbage, etc. and then only to be documented later on.  What happened to Copernicus? Galileo?

So dear kindred spirits, I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences in conscious connections with our animal companions.  More to come….

Kindred Spirits Wishes for a Joyous Completion of 2011

My sister sent me this email that appears to be passing around the internet. It seems quite appropriate for this blog at this time.  Pictures and captions regarding the human animal bond and inter-species connections always stimulate a smile.  The joyous smile then subsequently creates a change in our neurotransmitters and neurohormones and thereby positive shifts in our behaviors and actions that fill us and thereby others with joy.  May these photographs bring joy to your hearts and your families as the dynamic year of 2011 comes to a conclusion.
Blessings for a joyous New Year and may all your positive intentions manifest in ways beyond your wildest imagination and may they all be of benefit to all beings!

Celebrate the Holidays with All Beings: A Special Gorilla Connection

gorilla connectionGorilla Connection

After a few week hiatus from writing about  insights on the kindred spirits project blog due to a “time-challenged”  schedule of seeing my horse, dog and cat patients,  there are so many exciting and interesting perspectives I would like to share with all of you.  I would like to begin this renewed sharing with a video that brought such joy to my heart. It feels especially appropriate for this holiday season, illustrating the connection between all beings that transcends words.

This video of  a  Gorilla Connection, where an ecotourist  visiting them in their endangered sanctuary in Uganda demonstrates to me how if we all can shift our hearts and minds to be in an inner place of love wherever possible, what miracles can occur.  They have chosen to introduce a complete stranger to their intimate family of parents and children.  Wherever I go, I find that if we come from a place of inner peace and quiet, without fear, animals of all species gradually warm up to us and treat us as one with them.  I am blessed to share my small sanctuary with two family of deer who give birth, one to one fawn and one to twins every year underneath my deck.  A pair of Anna’s hummingbirds stay all winter around my cabin sitting in the dead arbutus tree branches or on top of the douglas firs and sip the nectar from the yellow oregon grape flowers.  Eagles, otters, seals, herons, flickers, junko’s, chicadee’s, quail, raccoon, and many other families reside on, above, below or around my sanctuary.  As we all get to know each other throughout the various seasons, we come to accept all living together comfortably without fear.  As I fill the bird feeder, the birds are all inches away on the branches chirping to me as if to say “thank you and hurry up please”.  When I sit in a chair outside, the hummingbirds will come fly right in front of my face and look at me eye to eye.  We can truly live in a garden of eden if we choose to.  It is simply a choice to create a sanctuary around us and within us that nurtures a compassionate life with all beings, beyond all labels and species.

In this time of celebration of the winter solstice,  Christmas, Chanukah, the shifting of seasons, let us celebrate not only with our immediate family, but with the larger family of all beings, two-legged, four-legged and winged.  Let us expand our compassion web to integrate a fun, loving relationship and rejoice in a much more expansive view of family!  Yes, we are all family, in one small neighborhood, mother earth!

Wishing you all a joyous, healthy, peaceful, prosperous, fun, enlightening and awesome holiday season and New Year!

Blessings from your kindred spirit,

Allen M. Schoen, MS, DVM

Horse Bulldog Connection Transcends Us vs. Them

Horse and Bulldog

In the midst of all the challenges facing the world these days, animals continue to be excellent models for us on how we can transcend the “us vs. them” mentality.  In this smile stimulating video on huffpost,  the police horse and the bulldog are connecting at a deeper level.  Perhaps if humans consciously chose to be less adversarial and realize we are all in this together, then we  could choose to see what we share in common and how through this commonality, we can come to terms of agreement based on what is best for all beings.  I know this sounds quite simplistic, but sometimes, if do not ask the correct basic questions, we will never come up with the best answers.  Can we choose to be like this horse and dog and from that common ground, work on developing a society that really focuses on what is best for all beings involved?

Dog pilgrimage walk on the beach

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
From Daily Chore to Inspiring Spiritual Practice: Dog-Walking as Pilgrimage
Have you ever whined that once again the dog needs a walk?
Have you ever shivered with the unsavoury thought that you had to take the dog out in the cold and rain?
If you are like me, the answer to those questions is an unbridled “Yes! Arghhh!”
So it got me thinkin’ . . . . what if I started to ‘go on pilgrimage’ with my dear dog Paz? What would happen? How would that change my daily walks with him?
Would I enjoy it more? Would HE enjoy it more?  It has been an interesting experiment for me. So, what has happened for me so far . . . .
Now. I seem to be more in now. I don’t stop to smell all those dog-yummy smells, mind you, but I do notice the roses, the trees, my inner self and enjoy Paz’s whims more.
Perspective. The real trick to life is not avoiding or not having problems – it’s perspective. I find, when I’m out, on pilgrimage, I leave my routine, I leave my stuck places and get some perspective on what is happening back at the ranch. (OK, no horses here, but you know . . . !) Then I relax and can be more creative. I find that this can happen in even just a very few minutes in the most seemingly mundane of circumstances – if I’m wearing my pilgrimage hat.
Connection. As I relax I can connect more. With my dog, my self, and other living beings around me of all types! And that is just helpful all ’round.
That dang dog waiting at the door wagging his tail is really an astonishing opportunity!

I am so excited to announce that my friend and colleague Dr. Allen Schoen is going to be co-facilitating this Dog-Walking as Pilgrimage walkshop with me. For decades he has been pioneering holistic, integrative veterinary medicine and human animal bond, practicing, writing and teaching worldwide. His latest work can be seen herewww.kindredspiritsproject.com where, as he says, his vision is: “to assist animal lovers throughout the world to gather together and unite in order to nurture, transform, concentrate and focus the unconditional love that they share with their animal companions into compassionate action to help improve the quality of life, happiness and health of all beings.” Important work!
Pilgrimage is not something I’ve done, it is something I inhabit. It has taken me to many parts of the world and deeper into myself. I have noticed that when we frame a walk, a trip, a journey of any kind, as a pilgrimage, we shift from being a seer of sites to being a seer from our own hearts and souls. We CAN just walk out our front doors and be on pilgrimage whenever we have that urge to walk! Check it out in more detail atwww.nicolemoen.ca.

National Wolf Awareness Week

Periodically I enjoy introducing kindred spirits to each other.  My dear friends at the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, NY are doing extraordinary work to preserve endangered species of wolves.  In addition, one veterinarian who used to work with me, Dr. Amy Rodriguez and her husband, Neil Abramson,  have worked for the benefit of animals through their entire adult lives.  Dr. Rodriguez is an excellent integrative veterinarian and her husband is one of our nation’s top legal advocates for animals. I had the honor of reviewing Neil’s first novel, “Unsaid” about the deeper connections with animals.  It is definitely a great read about the deeper spiritual connections that we share with our animal friends and will touch many people.  These friends of come together at a booksigning of Neil’s new book in order to benefit the Wolf Conservation Center.

Here is the notice about these great events.  These are truly kindred spirits helping to create a more compassionate society. I am grateful to share their friendship with all of you.
